Gender Equity and Sustainable Livelihoods in Renewable Energy Value Chains

This research paper introduces a conceptual framework for assessing gender equity and sustainable livelihoods within Renewable Energy Value Chains (REVCs), utilizing a social reproduction lens to analyze the intersection of paid and unpaid labor, care responsibilities, and structural inequalities.

• The proposed conceptual framework moves beyond narrow employment outcomes to examine how renewable energy transitions interact with the broader organization of work and life, specifically focusing on the relationship between unpaid labor, care responsibilities, and intersecting inequalities related to geography, class, and gender.
• The framework is structured around three interconnected dimensions: the global distribution of value (analyzing if Global South countries can move past low value-added roles), work and livelihoods (assessing employment quality, gendered labor segmentation, and unpaid care work), and ecological justice (aligning environmental goals with socially just development).
