Programa del IAI de Fellowship de Ciencia, Tecnología y Políticas (STeP) Fase piloto 2020-2024

The STeP Fellowship program (2020-2024) aims to bridge the gap between science and policy in Latin America and the Caribbean by embedding scientists within public or private host organizations. The program provides a two-year professional development curriculum focused on leadership, communication, and science diplomacy, while establishing an inter-American network to share best practices in evidence-based policy for global change and sustainable development.

• The STeP program addresses a regional gap in Latin America and the Caribbean where, despite increasing scientific research capacity, the adoption of science to inform policy remains a challenge due to unequal resource distribution and unpredictable political environments.
• The program implements a two-year professional development model for scientists and policymakers, focusing on three core pillars: leadership, communication, and science diplomacy.
• Operational responsibilities are split between the IAI and host organizations: the IAI provides the training program and international networking, while host organizations identify priority sectors, provide institutional conditions for work plans, and fund fellow stipends.
• The 2020 pilot phase launched with cohorts in Argentina and Mexico, involving host institutions such as the Asociación Argentina de Consorcios Regionales de Experimentación Agrícola (AACREA), the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), and the Secretaría de Educación, Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (SECTEI) of Mexico City.
• The program's training framework is based on objectives developed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellowships Program.
