MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) BETWEEN THE SMITHSONIAN TROPICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (STRI) AND THE DIRECTORATE OF THE INTER-AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH (IAI)

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) have signed a five-year agreement to collaborate on global change research in the Americas. The partnership focuses on biodiversity, health, and sustainable development, emphasizing data sharing, capacity building, and science diplomacy. The MOU provides a non-binding framework for future specific project agreements and joint funding proposals without creating immediate financial obligations.

• STRI and the IAI Directorate intend to collaborate on a range of global environmental change issues in the Americas, specifically focusing on health, climate change, biodiversity, ecosystems, and the roles of indigenous peoples and local communities.
• The collaboration includes several specific knowledge-sharing priorities: transdisciplinary science, open data and open science, science diplomacy via the IAI Science Diplomacy Center, and the co-production of knowledge with Indigenous Peoples and local communities through Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.
• The parties aim to strengthen regional capacities through joint capacity-building initiatives, training programs, and communication mechanisms to enhance collaboration across IAI-member states and other non-member states in the Americas.
• The MOU does not create any immediate budgetary obligations; instead, it requires separate written 'Project Agreements' for any specific initiative that involves the commitment of funds or resources.
• The agreement is valid for five years from the date of signature (December 16, 2024) and will automatically renew for similar periods unless terminated by either party with 60 days' written notice.
