Summary report of activities by the IAI Directorate during the 2021-2022 intersessional period
Summary
The IAI Directorate reported progress in science and capacity building between 2021 and 2022, highlighting the expansion of the STeP Fellowship program to 45 fellows across 10 countries and the launch of the IAI Virtual Campus. Key scientific efforts included contributions to the IPCC 6th Assessment Report and the development of climate-health tools for the Caribbean. The Directorate also focused on science diplomacy, establishing the IAI Center for Science Diplomacy and partnering with the Belmont Forum to fund transdisciplinary research. Efforts to increase inclusivity led to the drafting of a Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy and the provision of 100 scholarships for students from Latin America and the Caribbean to attend the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress 2022.
Key insights
- The IAI expanded its capacity building through the Science and Technology Policy (STeP) Fellowships Program, which grew to include 45 Fellows from 10 countries within less than two years.
- The Directorate focused on the intersection of climate and health, contributing to the IPCC 6th Assessment Report (WGII Chapter 12 on Central and South America) and implementing projects in the Caribbean on vector-borne diseases and climate variability with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank.
- To enhance science diplomacy and transdisciplinary research, the IAI is launching the IAI Center for Science Diplomacy in 2022 and collaborated with the Belmont Forum to provide 100 scholarships for students from Latin America and the Caribbean to attend the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI) 2022.
- The IAI is addressing inclusivity and gender equity by drafting a Gender, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy for presentation at CoP-30 and partnering with UNICEF LACRO to incorporate the perspectives of children and youth into global environmental change research.
- The Directorate improved science communication and policy interfaces by re-launching its newsletter in July 2021, which saw a threefold increase in readership by February 2022, and by producing six bilingual briefs on Small Grant Program projects.
- The IAI is managing several regional projects, including the SISSA project for drought information systems in southern South America funded by the EU and AECID, and the EPIC-N project to connect universities with local governments in Latin America and the Caribbean.
