Updates on the new IAI Strategic Plan

The IAI Directorate has proposed a Strategic Plan for 2024-2030 organized around three themes: meeting the needs of Parties to address global environmental change, developing science for the sustainability of the Americas, and ensuring the sustainability of the IAI as an organization. Key initiatives include funding transdisciplinary research on the climate-environment-health nexus, biodiversity, and ocean-coast-island systems through the Belmont Forum, as well as expanding the STeP program and establishing a new office in Central America and the Caribbean by 2025.

• The IAI Strategic Plan is structured around three core themes: addressing global environmental change challenges for Parties, contributing science to the sustainability of the Americas, and ensuring the organizational sustainability of the IAI.
• Under Theme I, the IAI aims to strengthen the science-policy interface by organizing annual training workshops for decision-makers on science diplomacy and creating a repository of evaluations from intergovernmental scientific panels by 2025.
• The IAI plans to implement an Open Data Policy, which includes generating a database of publications from IAI-funded projects by 2024 and building a digital infrastructure for data accessibility by 2026.
• Theme II focuses on funding transdisciplinary research via the Belmont Forum, specifically targeting the climate, environment, and health nexus in 2024, tropical forests in 2024-2025, and oceans, coasts, and islands in 2025-2026.
• To increase its regional presence, the IAI plans to open an office in Central America and the Caribbean in 2025 and explore linkages with organizations such as SICA and CARICOM.
• The IAI seeks to ensure financial stability by exploring increased voluntary contributions from Parties to the core budget and establishing relationships with philanthropy and development banks.
