Informe de la 18a Reunión del Comité Asesor Científico (SAC)
Summary
The 18th SAC meeting focused on reviewing the IAI's scientific agenda, managing Core Research Network (CRN) projects, and planning future funding calls. Key outcomes included the formation of working groups to rewrite the scientific agenda, the recommendation of a new Small Grants Program (SGP) with a US $600,000 budget, and the appointment of Walter Fernández as the new SAC President. The committee also discussed collaborations with the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP).
Key insights
- The SAC confirmed the validity of the four themes in the IAI Scientific Agenda but noted that Theme 4 does not align well with Themes 1 through 3. To address this, two working groups were formed to rewrite the paragraphs under each theme for approval by June 2003.
- The SAC recommended launching a new round of the Small Grants Program (SGP) with a total budget of US $600,000, offering grants up to US $30,000 for projects lasting one year and involving at least three IAI member countries.
- External evaluations of the Core Research Network (CRN) projects were generally positive, though the SAC observed significant disparities in the detail and comprehensiveness of individual evaluations.
- The IAI identified a lack of consistent recognition in publications resulting from CRN projects, with the rate of IAI acknowledgement varying between 8% and 80%. The SAC affirmed that the IAI must be mentioned in all publications regardless of the size of the CRN's contribution.
- The PESCA program was deemed very successful in terms of scientific output and capacity building, particularly for scientists from underrepresented member countries such as Cuba and Jamaica, although it failed to attract participants from the Dominican Republic and Guatemala.
- Due to a lack of financial resources, the IAI decided to replace its Summer Institutes with three specific training courses in 2003 focusing on sustainable land use in the Amazon, global climate change mitigation, and climate vulnerability in Central America and the Caribbean.
