Terms of Reference

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) has issued Terms of Reference for a consultancy to develop training materials on science diplomacy related to global environmental change (GEC) in the Americas. This initiative supports the creation of a regional Center for Science Diplomacy (CSD) and the IAI's Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship program.

• The IAI is establishing a regional Center for Science Diplomacy (CSD) to advance science diplomacy training, networks, and best practices across the Americas. The goal is to improve the capacity of institutions and professionals to use science diplomacy tools to create more effective international collaborations and public policies.
• The consultancy is tasked with producing several specific deliverables, including a technical report featuring 15-25 science diplomacy case studies from IAI member countries, a virtual simulation game, and an asynchronous virtual curriculum hosted on a learning management system (LMS). The final output is a comprehensive training package available in both English and Spanish, implemented via webinars and a 'train the trainer' workshop in one member country.
• The consultancy is valued at up to USD $100,000 with a planned implementation period of 12 months starting in March 2022. The IAI requires the lead organization to be from an IAI member country and encourages applications from teams led by individuals from underrepresented groups or those with multi-sectoral and multi-country representation.
• The IAI defines global change as the interactions of social, physical, chemical, and biological processes that regulate the Earth system, specifically how these are influenced by and impact human activities. The organization's strategic areas for improvement in the Americas include climate change adaptation and mitigation, food, water, and energy security, poverty and inequality reduction, human health, and the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems.
