The IAI Strategic Plan

The IAI Strategic Plan (2019–2044) establishes a long-term framework to bridge the gap between science and policy in the Americas. The plan is organized into three themes: meeting the needs of member Parties, advancing science for regional sustainability, and ensuring the organizational sustainability of the IAI. Key priorities include promoting transdisciplinary research on climate action, water and energy security, and biodiversity, while expanding the institute's membership and establishing a 100 million USD endowment fund.

• The IAI aims to act as a bridge between science and policy over the next 25 years, focusing on co-creating knowledge with scientists and policy makers to ensure research is useful and applicable to societal needs.
• The strategic framework identifies eight priority areas for science-based sustainability in the Americas: poverty and equality, food security, water security, energy security, climate action, human health and wellbeing, biodiversity and ecosystem services, and clean air, water, and soil.
• Regarding climate action, the IAI will support a transdisciplinary research agenda that includes monitoring Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), detecting extreme events, and studying land use change and climate change (LUCC).
• The IAI prioritizes the inclusion of underrepresented groups in its scientific processes, specifically naming Indigenous Peoples, women, youth, the rural and urban poor, and people with disabilities.
• To ensure long-term organizational sustainability, the IAI has set a goal to establish an endowment fund targeting 100 million USD within ten years.
• The institute intends to expand its regional reach by assisting four nations in Central America and the Caribbean to join the IAI by 2022.
