This fact sheet describes a research project (SGP-HD009) aimed at developing and validating the Local Knowledge Scenarios (LKS) methodology to evaluate how American rural producers perceive global change and incorporate that knowledge into future land use scenarios.

• The project developed the Local Knowledge Scenarios (LKS) method, which integrates field work with Agent-Based Models to facilitate the participative construction of land use scenarios. This methodology was tested and validated through workshops and field work across five distinct project areas: the Pampa in Uruguay, the Amazonian Rainforest in Brazil, the North Atlantic Coast in Newfoundland and Canada, the Andean Mountain in Peru, and the North American Prairie in Canada.
• Initial results from the LKS method indicate that local populations in the Amazon have an increased awareness of soil degradation and hydrological changes caused by deforestation; however, the enforcement of environmental laws regarding deforestation is hindered because the local population does not accept them.
• In the Change Islands of Canada, the fishing community's objective to maintain their standard of living while diversifying income through sectors like tourism is unattainable without national public policies that permit adaptation to specific local situations.
