Science Advisory Committee (SAC) and Science Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC)

This briefing outlines the current composition and activities of the Science Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research, including recommendations for electing new SAC members.

• The Science Advisory Committee (SAC) has established specific criteria and priority areas for the election of two new members. Candidates should be internationally recognized for scientific work on global change in the Americas, with a focus on geographic, gender, and ethnic balance. The SAC identifies Central America, the Caribbean, and the tropical Andes as underrepresented regions and encourages nominees from historically under-represented groups. Desired expertise includes social sciences (urbanism, economy, education), Indigenous and traditional knowledge, climate change adaptation and mitigation, planetary health, and informatics (big data, AI, and large-scale networks).
• During an intercessional period consisting of nine monthly joint meetings, the SAC and SPAC contributed to several strategic and operational initiatives. These include the revision of the science agenda, gender policy, strategic plan indicators, a regional assessment concept note, a CRN3 Special Issue in Environmental Development, SciTalk webinars on COVID-global change, and STeP training activities. They also provided strategic guidance on funding and partners.
• The committees have established four specific subcommittees: a COVID working group, a Regional Assessment group, a Climate, Environment and Health Steering Committee, and a group focused on Indicators for the IAI’s Strategic Plan.
