MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING between the World Meteorological Organization and The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on February 16, 2023, to foster international cooperation and the exchange of scientific information. The agreement focuses on understanding the impact of global change on regional and continental environments in the Americas to support mitigation and adaptation efforts. The parties commit to annual meetings, reciprocal representation at events, and the exchange of publications, operating on a non-legally binding basis and generally without the exchange of funds.

• The MoU creates a framework for the WMO and IAI to cooperate on scientific, technological, regulatory, and development issues, specifically to generate interdisciplinary information that supports global change mitigation and adaptation efforts and informs policy decisions.
• The agreement mandates specific coordination activities, including the exchange of publications, the appointment of representatives to coordinate relations, and a requirement for the parties to meet at least once a year to review progress and identify new cooperation areas.
• The partnership is non-legally binding and operates on a no-exchange-of-funds basis unless otherwise agreed in writing, with all activities subject to the availability of funding.
• The MoU has an initial duration of five years, with automatic five-year renewals unless a termination notice is provided six months before the renewal date.
