Declaration of the Parties and Associated Institutions of the IAI on Water Security, Biodiversity, and Climate Resilience in the Americas

The Declaration of the Parties and Associated Institutions of the IAI, issued during the 33rd Meeting of the Conference of the Parties in Asunción, Paraguay, outlines a commitment to enhancing water security, biodiversity, and climate resilience in the Americas through transdisciplinary science, open data sharing, and science diplomacy.

• The Americas are experiencing an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, including heat waves, floods, and droughts, which have resulted in economic and human losses and negatively impacted biodiversity.
• While 69% of energy in Latin America and the Caribbean comes from renewable sources according to a 2024 WMO report, extreme events and droughts pose risks to energy sustainability and hydroelectric power generation.
• The signatories commit to strengthening regional response and early warning systems for extreme events by applying transdisciplinary science across hydrology, meteorology, economics, and social sciences to benefit sectors including transportation, energy, agriculture, and health.
• The declaration emphasizes the need for regional cooperation to implement the United Nations Global Initiative 'Early Warning for All' (EW4All), aiming for all people to be protected by multi-hazard early warning systems by 2027.
• The parties pledge to promote science diplomacy, the exchange of open and interoperable data (including environmental, social, meteorological, and hydrological data), and the mobilization of resources to support evidence-based public policies and plans at national and subnational levels.
