The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is inviting parties to co-design an initiative to improve climate risk assessment and capacity building for adaptation and mitigation in Latin America and the Caribbean. Supported by the USGCRP and AmeriGEO, the initiative aims to foster regional partnerships, provide peer-to-peer training in climate modeling and risk assessment, and synthesize data for national strategies. Seed grants may be available for participants.

• The Conference of the Parties, during its 29th meeting, adopted Decision XXIX/9, which establishes a working group to develop and implement the 'Initiative for Conducting a National Climate Assessment in support of Adaptation and Mitigation: Training and Capacity Development in Latin America and the Caribbean'. This group is a collaboration between the SAC, the SPAC, and the Executive Directorate of the IAI, with a mandate to report achievements at the 30th meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
• The initiative is supported by United States agencies coordinated by the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), the IAI, and various Latin American and Caribbean countries involved in AmeriGEO. Its primary goal is to strengthen climate risk assessments to support local and regional decision-making, helping communities with climate change mitigation and adaptation.
• The proposed framework for the initiative includes three main objectives: establishing long-term regional engagement and partnerships (including civil society and indigenous groups) via coordination with IAI and AmeriGEO; providing peer-to-peer learning and training in climate modeling, trend analysis, and vulnerability and risk assessments; and conducting data synthesis and analysis for those planning mitigation and adaptation strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
• The initiative is in its early stages, focusing on planning, scope, and partnership creation. Financial support via seed grants may be available to participants, with the IAI Executive Directorate offering to assist the USGCRP in administering these grants.
