Draft IAI Strategic Plan

The Draft IAI Strategic Plan (2019–2044) establishes a 25-year roadmap to support sustainable policies in the Americas through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research. The plan is organized into three themes: meeting the needs of member Parties, advancing a science agenda for regional sustainability, and ensuring the organizational sustainability of the IAI. Key priorities include climate action, water and food security, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of open science and data. The IAI aims to act as a bridge between scientific research and policy-making, targeting the co-creation of knowledge and the enhancement of institutional capacities across the region.

• The IAI's vision is to enable a sustainable Americas that collaboratively addresses global change challenges through flexible, science-based policies and actions.
• The strategic plan spans 25 years (2019–2044), with individual actions planned on three- to six-year timeframes to align with the tenure of the Executive Director and evolving needs of member Parties.
• The IAI emphasizes transdisciplinarity and the inclusion of underrepresented groups, such as Indigenous Peoples, women, youth, and the rural poor, in research design and implementation.
• The science agenda focuses on several critical sustainability goals for the Americas, including food security, water security, climate action, energy security, and the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES).
• A core objective for biodiversity is to use scientific evidence to increase terrestrial, freshwater, and marine protected areas to meet Aichi Target 11.
• The IAI mandates the use of open science and open data for all sponsored research to ensure equitable access to information for governments and communities.
• To ensure organizational growth and sustainability, the IAI intends to attract new member Parties, specifically targeting the Caribbean Islands, and seek diverse funding sources beyond the NSF, including endowments.
