MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND THE INTER-AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL CHANGE RESEARCH

The AAAS and IAI have entered into a five-year agreement, effective September 14, 2018, to collaborate on science, education, and capacity building related to global environmental change in the Americas. The partnership aims to strengthen scientific contributions to policy and support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through joint activities such as high-level conferences, science diplomacy workshops, and sustainability research. A Joint Steering Committee will oversee the coordination and evaluation of these efforts, with both parties maintaining their institutional autonomy and assuming their own costs unless otherwise agreed.

• The primary objective of the partnership is to enhance scientific input into policy and build institutional and human capacities to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development within the Americas.
• The parties intend to collaborate across several specific domains, including science diplomacy, science-policy communication, and research into global environmental change and its effects on human well-being.
• Planned joint activities include the organization of scientific meetings, government conferences, and science diplomacy workshops, as well as collaboration on multilateral environmental framework meetings and joint fundraising.
• The agreement establishes a Joint Steering Committee, consisting of two representatives from each party, to coordinate activities and review progress via consensus.
• The MOU is valid for five years from September 14, 2018, and mandates that all data and publications resulting from sponsored work be freely and openly available.
