Regional workshop on Climate, Environment and Health

This report details the Regional Workshop on Climate, Environment, and Health held from 13 to 17 March 2023 in San Martín de los Andes, Argentina. Organized by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), the event aimed to strengthen the capacity of researchers and policymakers to address the intersection of climate, environment, and human health through transdisciplinary and intersectoral approaches.

• The workshop emphasized that the Americas must improve public institutional capacity to manage environmental determinants of health (EDHs), with a specific focus on vulnerable populations. The report advocates for an integrated approach involving the health sector and partners in climate, environment, and disaster risk management, noting that solutions should be context-specific and based on national priorities.
• The event brought together nearly 100 experts from 20 countries in the Americas, representing international, governmental, non-governmental, and academic institutions. Thirteen transdisciplinary research teams participated, with those from IAI member states eligible for funding to implement seed projects designed to support decision-making.
• The Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action, Climate, Environment and Health II (CRA2) call for proposals was announced during the workshop. This global funding opportunity targets innovative initiatives to improve the quality of life for vulnerable populations, with the IAI providing funding for teams from member countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.
• In Neuquén Province, Argentina, several municipalities have implemented specific climate and health initiatives: San Martín de los Andes is focusing on reducing transport-related greenhouse gas emissions and creating a GHG inventory; Las Coloradas is developing semi-closed park areas to promote physical activity and the 'One Health' concept; Neuquén Capital is enhancing laboratory capacities to control ehrlichiosis and ticks; and Chos Malal is prioritizing the prevention of zoonoses in cats and dogs through vaccination and castration.
• A network of municipalities in Argentina was established to collaborate on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, an initiative shared by the mayor of San Martín de los Andes to promote local-level knowledge sharing and effective strategy development.
• Regional health sector discussions identified critical gaps and challenges in the Americas, including poverty, lack of education, the use of carbon for heating and cooking, and access to safe and clean water, all of which are exacerbated by Covid-19 and climate change.
