- The 6th CoP in 1999 approved an amendment to Article XIII, Section 1 of the IAI Creation Agreement, setting the minimum annual voluntary contribution at US$ 5,000, with contributions made in multiples of US$ 1,000.
- The IAI has consistently utilized two primary advisory bodies for its operations: the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Liaison Advisory Committee (SPAC), with members elected by consensus during CoP sessions.
- The 18th CoP in 2011 supported the creation of a virtual Water Security Center formed by the University of Arizona and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
