REPORT OF THE COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH NETWORK (CRN3) RESEARCHERS MEETING

This report documents the Collaborative Research Network (CRN3) Researchers Meeting held in Cancun, Mexico, from November 29 to December 1, 2017. The meeting, organized by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) with support from Mexico and the US National Science Foundation, focused on translating scientific results into actionable policy outputs, enhancing science communication, and establishing open data principles for CRN3 projects.

• The IAI is working to improve the translation of scientific research into actionable outputs for policy makers, recognizing that while the science in its programs is excellent, the process of moving from science to action needs enhancement.
• Participants identified several critical factors for successful science-policy integration, including the role of interdisciplinarity in integrating social sciences, the importance of diverse networks (including students and mentors), and the necessity of flexibility due to the iterative nature of co-producing knowledge.
• The IAI is developing an open data system to register information from CRN3 and other projects, utilizing an offer from the Government of Uruguay's Agency for e-Government and Information Society (AGESIC) to provide access to its open data catalog.
• To ensure the sustainability of its Science Program, the IAI is exploring the diversification of funding sources and is discussing the creation of a Belmont-like forum of funding agencies in the Americas, with the IAI Directorate hosting the Belmont Forum Secretariat in Montevideo.
• The meeting resulted in several collaborative initiatives, including a plan for a special issue of a peer-reviewed policy/development journal featuring CRN3 position papers, expected to be published within 12 to 18 months.
• The IAI identified opportunities for better alignment with global processes, specifically seeking to provide IAI scientific results to the IPCC and IPBES and to better align projects with national environmental frameworks.
