ACTE DE MONTEVIDEO

The Act of Montevideo, signed between May 12 and 14, 1992, establishes the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) as a regional network of research units to foster cooperation on global change research across the Americas.

• The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) was created as a regional network of research units to coordinate scientific and economic research regarding the extent, causes, and consequences of global change in the Americas. The institute is intended to expand knowledge and act as an interface between science and political processes.
• The implementation of the IAI's research programs and the development of its specialized facilities, including affiliated and associated research services, are to be driven by scientific interest.
• A Implementation Committee, consisting of representatives from the signatory States and supported by a small staff, was established to prepare the basic materials necessary for the Institute to become operational upon the Agreement's entry into force. This committee remains active until the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
• The representatives agreed to notify the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED-92) about the creation of the IAI.
