Information on two Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs) Food systems and climate Sustainability of soils and groundwater

This briefing describes two Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs) led by the French National Research Agency (ANR) within the Belmont Forum: one focused on food systems and climate change, and another on the sustainability of soils and groundwater.

• The 'Food systems and climate (change)' CRA aims to develop sustainable and climate-resilient food value chains to address the challenge of feeding 9 to 10 billion people by 2050. The initiative focuses on assessing risks and vulnerabilities, offering low carbon footprint solutions, and analyzing socio-economic impacts, with a particular emphasis on the Global South, price volatility, and territorial access to nutritious food.
• The 'Food systems and climate (change)' CRA involves a collaboration between the Belmont Forum, the EU Joint Programme Initiative (JPI) FACCE, and the ERA-NET LEAP Agri. As of the briefing date, there are 31 ERA-NET partners, including 20 from Europe (11 countries), 7 from Africa, and 2 from Latin America and the Caribbean (Honduras and Guatemala). The IAI Directorate is working to include additional partners from Panama, Chile, Ecuador, and St Lucia.
• The 'Towards sustainability of soils and groundwater for societal benefit' CRA is currently in a scoping phase co-led by ANR and AllEnvi, supported by a Steering Committee including the NSF (USA), FAPESP (Brazil), and QNRF (Qatar). The project focuses on the 'Critical Zone'—the area from the lower atmosphere to the fresh bedrock—to understand the dynamics of socio-ecological systems and propose management transformations to maintain or rehabilitate these systems.
• The scoping phase for the soils and groundwater CRA began with a workshop in Vienna, Austria, on 5-7 April 2019. Currently, 16 funding agencies are participating, with the goal of increasing representation from Social Sciences and Humanities, stakeholders, and regional perspectives from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The scoping phase is scheduled to end in September 2019, with a call expected in late 2019 or early 2020.
