Information on two Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs) Food systems and climate Sustainability of soils and groundwater

The French National Research Agency (ANR) is leading two Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs). The first, 'Food systems and climate (change)', aims to develop climate-resilient and sustainable food value chains, with a specific focus on the Global South and regional food systems. It involves a partnership with the EU Joint Programme Initiative (JPI) FACCE and ERA-NET LEAP Agri, with 31 ERA-NET partners including entities from Europe, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The second, 'Towards sustainability of soils and groundwater for societal benefit', is in a scoping phase to understand the dynamics of the 'Critical Zone' (from the lower atmosphere to fresh bedrock) and propose management transformations. This second CRA is co-led by AllEnvi and ANR, with a steering committee including the NSF (USA), FAPESP (Brazil), and QNRF (Qatar).

• The 'Food systems and climate (change)' CRA seeks to create climate-resilient and sustainable food value chains, specifically addressing the challenge of feeding 9 to 10 billion people by 2050. The initiative focuses on the socio-economic impacts of climate change, price volatility, and the territorial dimension of food access, noting that impacts on the Global South are expected to be particularly severe.
• The 'Food systems and climate (change)' initiative involves a collaboration between the Belmont Forum, JPI FACCE, and ERA-NET LEAP Agri. As of the briefing, there are 31 ERA-NET partners, including 20 from Europe, 7 from Africa, and 2 from Latin America and the Caribbean (Honduras and Guatemala).
• The 'Towards sustainability of soils and groundwater for societal benefit' CRA focuses on the 'Critical Zone', defined as the area from the top of the lower atmosphere to the bottom of the fresh bedrock containing circulating groundwater. The goal is to understand the dynamics of this socio-ecological system and shift the decision-making processes of socio-economic actors to maintain or rehabilitate it.
• The scoping phase for the soils and groundwater CRA, co-led by ANR and AllEnvi, involves 16 participating funding agencies and is supported by an international Steering Committee comprising the National Science Foundation (USA), the Sao Paulo Research Foundation (Brazil), and the Qatar National Research Fund.
