Informe de la Comisión de Selección del Director Ejecutivo del IAI

This report details the selection process conducted by an 11-member committee to appoint a new Executive Director for the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), concluding with the recommendation of Dr. Marcos Regis da Silva.

• The selection process for the IAI Executive Director was managed by an 11-member commission including representatives from member countries, the Science and Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), and IAI staff. The job description was published on August 15, 2016, and the call for applications was open to all qualified individuals except citizens of Uruguay, per the IAI Creation Agreement.
• The commission received 25 applications by the October 7, 2016 deadline. The evaluation process involved narrowing the pool to 10 candidates for teleconference interviews in early November, followed by in-person interviews for 3 finalists in Montevideo during the week of January 23, 2017. A final discussion on these candidates took place via teleconference on February 10, 2017.
• The selection committee recommends Dr. Marcos Regis da Silva for the position of Executive Director. The commission identified a need for a leader with diplomatic and political experience to make IAI science relevant to regional decision-makers and to better engage Conference of Parties (CoP) members.
• Dr. Marcos Regis da Silva was selected based on over 25 years of experience in academia, the United Nations system, and international organization secretariats. His expertise includes global environmental change, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and the relationship between environmental change and trade in the Americas. He also presented a vision for open science, data sharing, and a strategic plan for the IAI for the coming decade.
