Summary report of activities from 1 July 2022 to date by the IAI Directorate

This report, prepared by the IAI Directorate for the Executive Council's fifty-fourth meeting, outlines the primary achievements and activities of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research from 1 July 2022 to 11 October 2022. It details progress in science communication, capacity building, and strategic partnerships aimed at addressing global environmental change in the Americas.

• The IAI Directorate implemented a virtual training program called the "Climate and Health Responder Course for Latin America" in partnership with PAHO and the Global Consortium on Climate & Health Education. The first phase included seven weeks of training on transdisciplinary research and science communication, selecting 26 teams from 14 countries and over 50 government individuals.
• To enhance science communication, the IAI published its first compendium on the Impacts of Climate Change in Latin America and the Caribbean, featuring 12 Op-Eds by STeP fellows and investigators published in regional newspapers in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
• The IAI is establishing a Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) and its Steering Committee to serve as a regional reference. As of the report date, the Board includes representatives from Brazil, Chile, and the United States, as well as experts from the Americas and abroad.
• The Science and Technology Policy (STeP) Fellowships Program has expanded to include 45 Fellows across 8 host countries and 11 nationalities. The current cohort consists of 12 males and 34 females with 41 different advanced degrees working in 30 public and private institutions.
• The IAI is collaborating with the Belmont Forum on Collaborative Research Actions (CRAs). This includes drafting the Climate, Environment and Health (CEH2) CRA call text for a 2023 launch and scoping the Amazonia Regional CRA, with a call expected in early 2024.
• The IAI Directorate is engaging in emerging issues and high-level diplomacy, including organizing the Americas Conference on Solar Radiation Modification (August 2022) and contributing to a High-Level Seminar on resilience in the Caribbean region involving 15 CARICOM nations in October 2022.
• The IAI-PAGES mobility program received applications in August 2022 from early career scientists in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, with a goal to support 4-6 fellows for the 2022-2023 program.
