Informe sobre la Iniciativa para la conducción de una evaluación climática nacional en apoyo a la adaptación y mitigación: Entrenamiento y desarrollo de capacidades en América Latina y el Caribe

This briefing reports on the progress of the 'Initiative for conducting a national climate assessment in support of adaptation and mitigation: Training and capacity development in Latin America and the Caribbean'. The initiative, supported by the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) and AmeriGEO in partnership with the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), aims to strengthen climate risk assessments to support local and regional decision-making.

• The initiative's primary goal is to provide opportunities for partnerships to improve climate risk assessments, which in turn support local and regional decision-making to help communities adapt to and mitigate climate change impacts. It intends to bring together risk assessment users, decision-makers, and experts, including IPCC assessment authors.
• The program is currently in its early stages, focusing on planning, scoping, and partnership building. Initial financial support via grants may be available to participants, with the IAI Executive Directorate offering to assist the USGCRP in administering these grants.
• A working group has been formed following a call for participation issued on November 23, 2021. As of the report date, the group includes a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and representatives from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.
• Implementation is expected to begin in the coming months, starting with a meeting between USGCRP, IAI, and AmeriGEO to define the program's general scope, assess available assets, and create a work plan and timeline.
