Construyendo capacidades para la toma de decisiones ambientales en los sectores científico y político

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) proposes an interdisciplinary and intersectoral capacity-building program to improve environmental decision-making regarding global change. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between natural and social sciences, as well as between fragmented government departments, to ensure that scientific knowledge is integrated into policy and that science is developed with clear 'clients' in the political sector.

• The initiative seeks to address fragmentation within government departments and the divide between natural and social sciences. It aims to build mutual trust and ensure the utility of scientific results by involving decision-makers from the start, allowing them to influence the development of interdisciplinary science.
• Proposed program activities include thematic workshops on topics jointly agreed upon by scientists and politicians. Potential themes identified through stakeholder discussions include the links between human health and environmental pressures, as well as regional environmental management, specifically citing the San Lorenzo-Great Lakes basin and the Plata Basin.
