Building joint capacities in science and policy sectors for environmental decision making

The IAI proposes a capacity building program to bridge the gap between natural and social sciences and across government departments to better address global environmental change. The initiative focuses on fostering mutual trust and co-evolution of science and policy through topical workshops, with initial cooperation involving UNESCO and SCOPE.

• Effective adaptation and mitigation of global change require decision-making that integrates knowledge across different scientific disciplines and across various government departmental and ministerial divisions.
• An evaluation of the IAI's first collaborative science program indicated that addressing complex problems requires interdisciplinary science to generate both societal and environmental knowledge, and that a lasting dialogue between science and policy actors is essential to guide both processes.
• The proposed capacity building program will utilize topical workshops based on mutually agreed themes to foster mutual trust and cooperation. Potential topics identified include the links between human health and environmental stressors, as well as regional environmental management in areas such as the La Plata Basin or the St. Lawrence - Great Lakes watershed.
• The IAI is coordinating with UNESCO and SCOPE to develop the program, and planned discussions at the UNFCCC SBSTA in June 2008 with governmental delegates and the Asia-Pacific Network (APN) aim to further refine the program's development.
