Building joint capacities in science and policy sectors for environmental decision making

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) proposes an interdisciplinary and intersectoral capacity building program designed to bridge the gap between scientists and government departments to improve environmental decision-making and adaptation to global change.

• The IAI proposes an interdisciplinary and intersectoral capacity building program for scientists and government departments to facilitate timely decision-making regarding global environmental change, emphasizing the need for scientists to link across disciplines and policy actors to link across departmental and ministerial divisions.
• Guidance for the program was derived from an evaluation of the IAI's first collaborative science program, which concluded that interdisciplinary science is necessary to generate environmental and societal knowledge and that early, lasting dialogue between science and policy actors is critical.
• The program aims to foster mutual trust and cooperation through topical workshops on mutually agreed themes, such as the links between human health and environmental stressors or regional environmental management in the La Plata Basin and the St. Lawrence - Great Lakes watershed.
• The IAI is coordinating with UNESCO and SCOPE to develop the program, with further discussions planned for the UNFCCC SBSTA in early June 2008 involving scientists, governmental delegates, and the Asia-Pacific Network (APN).
