DRAFT REPORT OF THE FIFTH MEETING OF THE CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES

The draft report of the Fifth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP) to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), held June 4-5, 1998, in Arlington, Virginia, details the approval of a revised science agenda, budget authorizations, the re-election of Director Armando Rabuffetti, and the establishment of a capacity-building program for under-represented countries.

• The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) reported that while 4,000 scientists had been involved in the program, resource limitations meant only one in ten proposals received funding. Selection criteria for these proposals included scientific excellence, capacity building, policy relevance, and the involvement of at least four countries.
• Dr. Armando Rabuffetti was unanimously re-elected as the Director of the IAI for a second three-year term.
• The CoP approved the Core Budget Request for the 1998/99 fiscal year and the Financial Statements and Auditors’ Report for the 1996/97 fiscal year.
