Decisión XXIX/9: Informe sobre la Iniciativa para la conducción de una evaluación climática nacional en apoyo a la adaptación y mitigación: Entrenamiento y desarrollo de capacidades en América Latina y el Caribe

This report provides an update on the 'Initiative for conducting a national climate assessment in support of adaptation and mitigation: Training and capacity development in Latin America and the Caribbean,' established by Decision XXIX/9 of the Conference of the Parties of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI).

• The initiative aims to strengthen climate risk assessments to support local and regional decision-making, helping communities mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts. It intends to bring together risk assessment users, decision-makers, and experts, including IPCC assessment authors.
• The initiative is supported by the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) and various Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries involved in AmeriGEO, in partnership with the IAI. The IAI Executive Directorate has offered to assist the USGCRP in administering grants for participants who require financial assistance.
• As of the report's writing, a Working Group has been formed consisting of a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) and representatives from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, and Peru.
• The initiative is currently in its early stages, focusing on planning, scope, and partnership creation. A questionnaire distributed to the working group on February 2, 2022, regarding existing knowledge and work related to the initiative's goals, received a 71% response rate.
• Implementation is expected to begin in the coming months, starting with a meeting between the IAI, USGCRP, and AmeriGEO to determine the program's general scope, assess partner assets, and develop a work plan and timeline.
