Report from the Executive Council

The report provides an update on the 'Initiative for conducting a national climate assessment in support of adaptation and mitigation: Training and capacity building in Latin America and the Caribbean', a project supported by USGCRP, AmeriGEO, and the IAI to strengthen climate risk assessments for local and regional decision-making.

• The 'Initiative for conducting a national climate assessment in support of adaptation and mitigation: Training and capacity building in Latin America and the Caribbean' aims to enhance climate risk assessments to assist communities in adapting to and mitigating climate change impacts. It intends to connect researchers, including IPCC assessment authors, with decision-makers and experts in assessment design.
• The Initiative is currently in its early stages, focusing on scoping, planning, and partnership building. It is supported by the United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), the IAI, and several Latin American and Caribbean countries involved in AmeriGEO.
• A working group was established following Decision XXIX/9, with members from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and the Science Advisory Committee (SAC) joining as of the report's writing. A questionnaire sent to these members on 2 February 2022 regarding their relevant knowledge and work achieved saw a 71% response rate.
• Implementation is expected to begin in the months following the report, starting with a meeting between USGCRP, IAI, and AmeriGEO to define the program's scope, assess available assets, and establish a working plan and timeline.
