Interim report IAI-Regional Assessment Summary

This interim report describes the design and early implementation of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Regional Assessment (IAI-RA). The IAI-RA is a boundary-spanning activity intended to reconcile the supply and demand of scientific knowledge by identifying the specific information needs of government decision-makers in the Americas to better guide science funding and capacity building related to global environmental change (GEC).

• The IAI-RA is designed as a 'boundary spanning' activity to facilitate the co-production of research agendas, moving beyond traditional 'science push' (scientist-driven) or 'demand pull' (policy-maker-driven) models. It aims to identify knowledge that is both needed for government decisions and feasible for the scientific community to produce.
• The IAI-RA follows a seven-stage methodological approach: 1) scoping workshops, 2) information sessions, 3) survey distribution, 4) follow-up interviews, 5) sub-regional listening sessions, 6) policy analysis, and 7) mapping of information needs.
• As of April 2022, the first two stages of the IAI-RA were complete, and the third stage—the distribution of a survey to IAI Parties' focal points—was ongoing. By the time of writing, 14 Parties had completed the survey.
• The IAI-RA survey collects data on institutional priorities related to global environmental change, the types of decisions made by institutions, the use of scientific information in policy-making, and transboundary collaborations.
• The final results of the IAI-RA are intended to guide the IAI's science funding priorities and capacity building activities to ensure the production of science that helps Parties make more informed decisions regarding global environmental change. Additionally, the results will be used to facilitate collaboration between Parties with similar priorities.
