Interim report IAI-Regional Assessment Summary

The IAI Regional Assessment (IAI-RA) employs a co-production model to bridge the gap between scientific research and policy-making in the Americas. By utilizing a seven-stage methodology—including surveys, interviews, and policy analysis—the IAI aims to identify specific information needs of member governments to better prioritize research funding and capacity building for global environmental change.

• The IAI-RA is based on a 'co-production' model of science-policy interaction, which is viewed as more effective in the Global South and Latin America than linear 'science push' or 'demand pull' models. This model involves an iterative process where research agendas are shaped jointly by knowledge producers and users.
• The IAI acts as a 'boundary spanner' in the Americas, facilitating the exchange between scientific production and the use of that knowledge to support evidence-informed decision-making regarding global environmental change.
• The IAI-RA implementation follows a seven-stage methodological process: 1) scoping workshops, 2) information sessions, 3) survey distribution, 4) follow-up interviews, 5) sub-regional listening sessions, 6) policy analysis, and 7) mapping of information needs.
• As of April 2022, the first two stages of the IAI-RA (scoping workshops and information sessions) were completed, and the third stage (survey distribution) was ongoing, with 14 Parties having completed the survey at the time of writing.
• The results of the IAI-RA are intended to guide the IAI Directorate in prioritizing science funding and capacity building activities, and to facilitate collaboration between member Parties with similar priorities.
• The IAI-RA survey collects data on institutional priorities related to global environmental change, including climate action, water security, energy security, food security, biodiversity and ecosystem services, human health and wellbeing, poverty and equality, and clean air, water, and soil.
