Informe resumC resumido de las actividades de la Dirección Ejecutiva del IAI durante el período entreSS entre sesiones 2021-2022

The IAI Executive Directorate reported progress in science and capacity building between 2021 and 2022, despite COVID-19 challenges. Key achievements include the expansion of the Science, Technology, and Policy (STeP) fellowship to 45 fellows across 10 countries, the launch of a virtual campus, and the development of a new Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Policy. The IAI also strengthened regional health-climate research, particularly in the Caribbean and South America, and expanded its science diplomacy initiatives through new partnerships and the planned establishment of the IAI Center for Science Diplomacy.

• The IAI expanded its capacity-building efforts through the Science, Technology, and Policy (STeP) Fellowship program, which grew to include 45 fellows from 10 different countries within less than two years. The current cohort consists of 12 men and 34 women with 41 different advanced degrees working across 30 public and private institutions.
• The IAI has focused on the intersection of climate change and human health, contributing to the IPCC 6th Assessment Report (WGII Chapter 12 on Central and South America) and leading a working group on climate change adaptation for the Lancet Countdown in South America. Additionally, a virtual course on Climate and Health First Responders in Latin America attracted over 3,000 enrollments.
• To improve the science-policy interface, the IAI is establishing the IAI Center for Science Diplomacy, intended to launch in 2022. This center will provide training on concepts and tools to strengthen institutional capacities for effective public policy and international collaborations on transboundary challenges in the Americas.
• The IAI is implementing several regional projects to address environmental challenges, including a project on sargassum impacts on health and tourism in the Caribbean, and the SISSA project (funded by the EU and AECID) to implement a drought information system for southern South America benefiting six countries.
• The IAI is advancing social inclusion and diversity by drafting a new Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) Policy for presentation at CoP-30. It is also collaborating with UNICEF LACRO to include the perspectives of children and youth in global change research and provided 100 scholarships for students from underrepresented groups to attend the SRI 2022 conference.
• The IAI has increased its scientific communication and outreach, tripling the readership of its newsletter between July 2021 and February 2022 and more than doubling the readership of its updates email between September 2021 and 2022.
