Decision XXIX/12: Recommendations by the Parties and the SAC and SPAC on revisions to the IAI Scientific Agenda

This briefing document, prepared by the IAI Directorate, presents recommendations for revisions to the IAI Scientific Agenda for consideration by the Conference of the Parties at its 30th meeting. The revisions, developed by the Science Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), align the agenda's terminology with other multilateral environmental agreements and incorporate specific research priorities regarding climate variability.

• The Science Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) revised the Scientific Agenda to align its language with other multilateral environmental agreements, specifically the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This included replacing the term 'wild' ecosystems with 'natural' ecosystems.
• Following recommendations from the Parties at CoP-29, the SAC and SPAC added 'intra-seasonal' climate variability as a specific area of focus under research theme II of the Scientific Agenda.
• The IAI Scientific Agenda is designed to be an evolving document that allows Parties to integrate new scientific priorities and respond to the needs of countries in the region. It is intended to be revised as needed during intersessional periods, particularly during the revision of the Strategic Plan every 3-6 years.
• The IAI identifies four interrelated research themes to guide its scientific programs: Human dimensions of GEC; Climate change and climate variability; Ecosystems, biodiversity, land use and cover, and water resources; and Global change modulations of the atmosphere, oceans and fresh waters.
• The IAI's strategic areas for science focus on improving the ability of the Americas to sustain the region through the reduction of poverty and inequality, improving food, water, and energy security, climate change adaptation and mitigation, improving human health and wellbeing, conservation and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems, and ensuring clean air, water, and soil.
• The IAI operates under several foundational principles to ensure scientific excellence and international cooperation, including transdisciplinary science, open data/science, participatory and inclusive design, and the strengthening of capacities across the science-policy interface.
