Report of the IAI Executive Council

This report from the Chair of the Executive Council (EC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) outlines the activities and recommendations of the EC during the 2020-2021 intersessional period for the 29th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (CoP-29).

• The Executive Council (EC) recommends that the Conference of the Parties (CoP-29) approve several financial documents, including the Auditors report, the Financial status report, the IAI Core Budget and Country Contributions for FY 2021-2022, and the Preliminary budget request for 2022-2024. The IAI Directorate highlighted the necessity for Parties to provide voluntary contributions, noting that there are no recommended increases to the Core budget and Country contributions for FY 2021-2022.
• The EC recommends the adoption of a new Whistleblower policy by CoP-29. The policy was drafted jointly by IAI Directorate staff and reviewed by the legal department of the National Science Foundation, which found the policy to be satisfactory.
• The EC recommends the adoption of a Gender Policy on IAI Projects and Activities by CoP-29. The development of this policy involved advice from the EC, the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC), as well as consultations with scientific associations, science funding agencies, inter-governmental organizations, and major universities.
• Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the IAI Directorate's physical office was closed with staff working from home. Consequently, the Standing rules of the Executive Council were revised to accommodate virtual meetings, and the EC is inviting the Conference of the Parties to approve these revised rules.
• The EC has scheduled its 52nd meeting (EC-52) for November 2021. While the EC generally strives to meet in different locations among the Parties, EC-52 will be held via videoconference if regional travel restrictions remain in place beyond August 2021.
