Decisión XXVI/34: Memorando de Entendimiento con la Organización de los Estados Americanos

This briefing describes the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) and the Organization of American States (OAS) to enhance scientific contributions to policy and expand IAI membership in the Americas.

• The IAI and the Organization of American States (OAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a framework for cooperation aimed at strengthening scientific contributions to policy processes and developing human and institutional capacities in the Americas.
• The OAS Secretary General is intended to assist the IAI Executive Directorate in reaching out to non-party countries in the Caribbean and Central America to encourage them to ratify the Agreement for the Creation of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research.
• On March 19, 2019, in Washington, DC, the IAI presented its objectives at a joint session of the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) and the Permanent Council (CP), attended by 28 OAS member states.
• Following the joint session in Washington, DC, meetings were held with representatives from Honduras, Guyana, and El Salvador regarding the benefits of ratifying the Agreement, as well as a meeting with a representative from Ecuador to report on the upcoming IAI Conference of the Parties.
