Report of the IAI Directorate Science

The IAI Directorate Science report details the completion of the CRN3 program, which involved 17 projects across 15 IAI Parties and trained over 1,000 students. • The Third Collaborative Research Network (CRN3) program involved 17 projects and 90 research institutions across 15 of the IAI's 19 Parties. The program focused on regional scientific issues that could not be addressed by a single institution or state, leveraging US$ 15.36 million in additional funding during its sixth year.
• CRN3 significantly contributed to regional capacity building, training 1,060 students, 111 of whom received IAI scholarships. The program emphasized early-career and female researchers, with 42% (50) of the 120 Principal Investigators (PIs) being early-career researchers and 29% being female.
• The IAI Directorate is transitioning CRN3 results into cross-project synthesis products for policy makers for the 2019-2020 period. These synthesis activities will focus on four primary themes: food security, water security, ocean health, and human health.
• The Small Grant Program (SGP-HW) implemented a new design emphasizing transdisciplinarity and co-design with stakeholders. A proposal writing workshop involving 104 researchers and stakeholders from 14 countries was conducted to improve the quality of proposals, resulting in six projects being selected for funding.
• The SGP-HW program is the first IAI initiative to require data management plans in its proposals, directly supporting the implementation of the IAI Open Data Policy and Principles adopted by Decision XXVI/45.
• The IAI is formulating the fourth round of Collaborative Research Networks (CRN4), which will be guided by a revised Scientific Agenda and a new Strategic Plan. The Directorate is seeking to align CRN4 with the Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action (CRA) to establish a flexible co-funding mechanism.
• The CONICET-IAI research program in Argentina consists of seven four-year workplan proposals. After a period of inactivity due to lack of financing, activities resumed in 2018 with a second installment of funding from CONICET.
• The IAI Directorate has requested that the Conference of the Parties encourage member states to harmonize their national science and technology funding schemes to better match IAI calls, specifically for the upcoming CRN4.
