This report from the Executive Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) details updates to its information technology and network infrastructure, identifies critical deficiencies in its current website, and requests funding for a transition to a more secure, database-driven content management system.

• The IAI Executive Directorate implemented several security and operational upgrades to its IT infrastructure starting in September 2017. These measures included auditing software to ensure license compliance, prohibiting staff from installing unauthorized software, installing antivirus software across all servers and workstations, and completely reconfiguring the network system following a forensic analysis that revealed significant security issues. Additionally, the Directorate established a disaster recovery plan and a backup plan for staff.
• The IAI's current website, built on WordPress and simple HTML pages, is deemed insufficient and insecure. Specific problems include the need to update identical information on multiple pages individually, a non-intuitive user interface, and a lack of flexibility in the content management system (CMS). The Executive Directorate argues that WordPress is considered insecure by experts due to its reliance on plugins.
• The Executive Directorate is requesting extraordinary funding of 30,000 USD to convert the website into a database-managed system. This project includes a technical platform review (estimated at 20,000 USD), the development of a document management system, the creation of more comprehensive country profiles, and the implementation of a disaster recovery plan specifically for the website.
• The IAI is working to adopt international standards, protocols, and formats for open information exchange to ensure compatibility with national and international systems. This effort includes collaboration with the Belmont Forum on digital infrastructure (e-Infrastructure) and data management, as well as participation in a Latin American and Caribbean Data Management Workshop in Rio de Janeiro in April 2018, organized by the World Data System (WDS) and hosted by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
