Report of the Directorate

The IAI Directorate has developed a long-term Communication Strategy and Plan to enhance the visibility of its scientific research and capacity-building initiatives. The strategy aims to better inform Parties, attract new donors, and bridge the gap between science and policy in the Americas, specifically supporting the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

• The IAI has developed a long-term Communication Strategy and Plan to establish the organization as the "preeminent science to policy regional intergovernmental organization" and to increase its visibility to attract "new donors and new sources funding."
• The communication strategy identifies several core objectives, including providing research-related information to help Parties develop "national, international and regional policies and activities" and promoting the "co-design of scientific research" where scientists and policy makers work together to address governance challenges.
• The IAI Directorate currently lacks a dedicated staff member for communication tasks, operating with a total staff of 9 that includes support staff and consultants.
• The IAI has utilized various outreach tools and partnerships, including a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the Impacts of Climate Change in Latin America with 9,000 registered participants since 2016, and a "Science for Action" social media campaign during UNFCCC COP-23.
• Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay have formally recommended that the UNFCCC Secretariat consider efficient ways to communicate science with a regional focus through organizations like the IAI and suggested a science communication workshop to support National Adaptation Plans (NAP).
• The IAI is seeking to increase the integration of traditional knowledge by encouraging indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) to "celebrate, promote and communicate traditional knowledge related to global changes impacts".
• The proposed five-year action plan includes specific goals such as requiring competitive grant recipients to "dedicate budget and staff towards communication products" and developing a roster of media contacts for systematic responses to news articles.
