Article XI Associates of the Institute of the Agreement Establishing the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research

This briefing, prepared by the United States for the twenty-sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), recommends that Future Earth be invited to become an Associate of the Institute under Article XI of the Agreement Establishing the IAI.

• The United States recommends that Future Earth become an Associate of the IAI, arguing that it meets the requirements of Article XI of the Agreement and that such a status would provide a formal framework for identifying and implementing scientific projects in the Americas.
• Future Earth is an international non-governmental organization focused on accelerating transformations to global sustainability through research and innovation, operating via secretariat hubs, centers, and offices in Canada, Cyprus, Egypt, France, India, Japan, South Africa, Sweden, and the United States.
• Future Earth and the IAI have an existing relationship established via a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 7 September 2017, aimed at promoting cooperation to strengthen scientific contributions to policy processes and implement transdisciplinary research in the Americas to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
• Future Earth collaborates with the IAI through the Belmont Forum, including a Collaborative Research Program on Food, Water, and Energy in Urban Systems (SUGI /NEXUS) and the development of research actions on Ocean Sustainability and Climate, Environment and Human Health.
• Prior to the recommendation for Future Earth, three organizations had been invited to become Associates of the IAI: the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), the Centro del Agua del Trópico Húmedo para América Latina y el Caribe (CATHALAC), and the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP).
