Informe del Comité Asesor Científico del IAI

The 2016 report from the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) provides recommendations to the Conference of the Parties (CoP) to enhance regional research, capacity building, and the integration of natural and social sciences to address environmental and social crises in the Americas.

• The SAC recommends that the CoP identify and prioritize research themes that integrate natural and social sciences to provide solutions for regional social actors, starting with the CoP meeting in Santiago de Chile.
• The SAC proposes a restructuring of IAI calls for proposals to increase their frequency (potentially annually or every two years) and introduce tiered funding levels: large-scale projects (3-5 years, approx. $1 million), medium-scale (2-3 years, hundreds of thousands of dollars), and small grants (1-2 years, tens to one hundred thousand dollars).
• The SAC identifies several high-priority research areas for the Americas, including the food-water-energy nexus (specifically food security and water resource management), disaster risk reduction (DRR), changes in production and consumption patterns, and biodiversity across coastal, marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments.
• The report highlights a critical lack of infrastructure for hosting and distributing data and products to the public and decision-makers in the region. The IAI is initiating a dialogue with the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) through the AmeriGEOSS initiative to address this gap.
• The SAC recommends that the IAI launch a call for new project proposals, including new Core Research Networks (CRN), in 2017, with funding requests sent to CoP member countries in 2016-2017 or by March 2017.
