IAI activities plan July 2016 – June 2017

The IAI activities plan for July 2016 – June 2017 outlines institutional transitions, research initiatives focusing on interdisciplinarity and ecosystem services, capacity-building seminars across the Americas, and science-policy engagements with international bodies such as the UNFCCC, UNCBD, and IPBES.

• The IAI is managing institutional transitions involving its offices in Argentina and Brazil. While the Argentina office is partly staffed and collaborating with the Montevideo office and the SPAC, the host country agreement with Argentina is awaiting revisions from the Ministry of Foreign Relations. Simultaneously, a new agreement with Brazil is under review, and the administrative office in Brazil has not yet been fully closed.
• Research efforts are focused on the CRN3 projects, with a specific emphasis on improving interdisciplinarity and policy outreach. A small grants call regarding "the role of ecosystem services in adaptation" is scheduled for August 2016, which the IAI notes will require capacity building to ensure research teams can produce adequate interdisciplinary proposals.
• The IAI has planned several capacity-building initiatives for 2016/17, including a School of Advanced Science on nitrogen cycling, environmental sustainability and climate change in São Paulo in August 2016. Professional development seminars are scheduled for July 2016 in Costa Rica and April 2017 in Chile (on Managing ecosystem services from Tropical Forests), and November 2016 in the Dominican Republic and May 2017 in Canada (on Interdisciplinary Approaches to integrating Policy and Science for Sustainability).
• Science-policy activities include the launch of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on global environmental change at the UNFCCC COP-22 from 7-18 November 2016. Other planned engagements include a Science Forum for the UNCBD COP-13 in December 2016, a planned MoU signature with IPBES in September 2016, and participation in the first High-Level Political Forum from 11-20 July 2016 regarding the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
