Principios para guiar las actividades del Comité Asesor de Ciencia-Políticas del IAI

This report outlines the establishment and guiding principles of the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI). Created during the 21st Conference of the Parties (CoP) in Montevideo, Uruguay, the SPAC is tasked with developing strategies to strengthen links between the IAI's scientific network and policymakers, specifically focusing on adaptation strategies, methodologies, and tools to address global changes in the Americas.

• The Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) was established by the IAI's 21st Conference of the Parties (CoP) in Montevideo, Uruguay, on June 12-13, 2013. Its primary purpose is to advise the IAI on presenting scientific results in formats useful for decision-making, building institutional capacity for science-policy dialogue, and engaging political actors in the Institute's programs.
• The SPAC's work is guided by six core principles designed to improve decision support: starting with user needs through bidirectional communication; prioritizing interpersonal and inter-institutional processes over final products; acting as a 'boundary organization' to connect information producers with users; leveraging interdisciplinary and multi-organizational connections; maintaining institutional stability; and designing systems for continuous learning and flexibility.
• The IAI is evolving its science-policy interface by establishing a new office in Buenos Aires and a mechanism for analysis and foresight (such as 'Deliberation with Analysis') linked to a planned office in Brazil. Medium-term priorities include addressing the multidimensionality of global change, managing scientific uncertainty as a tool for mutual learning, navigating differences in value among stakeholders, and implementing adaptive management tools.
