Principles to Guide the Activities of the IAI Science Policy Advisory Committee

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) established the Science Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) to strengthen links between scientific research and policy-making communities, specifically focusing on adaptation strategies, methodologies, and tools for the Americas.

• The IAI Science Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) was established during the twenty-first Conference of the Parties in Montevideo, Uruguay, on June 12-13, 2013. Its primary purpose is to develop a strategy to improve links between scientific work and policy-making to support the IAI Directorate and the Conference of the Parties (CoP).
• The SPAC is tasked with advising the IAI on three core objectives: effectively linking science and research to decision making, building institutional capacity for dialogue between research and decision-making, and engaging policy stakeholders in IAI activities.
• The SPAC recommends focusing its programmatic efforts on adaptation strategies, methodologies, and tools to facilitate more responsive adaptation policy and decision-making regarding global changes in the Americas.
• The work of the SPAC is guided by six overarching principles: beginning with users' needs, prioritizing processes over products, linking information producers and users, building connections across disciplines and organizations, seeking institutional stability, and designing for learning.
• The IAI is expanding its science-policy linkages through a new office in Buenos Aires and the SPAC. Additionally, it aims to establish an analysis and foresight mechanism, such as 'Deliberation with analysis', linked to an office in Brazil.
