IAI Directorate Report to the Twenty Third Conference of the Parties

The IAI Directorate Report for July 2014 - May 2015 details the institute's efforts to integrate science and policy, manage collaborative research networks, and expand capacity building across the Americas. • The IAI and Peru's Ministry of Environment co-organized an International Symposium on Biodiversity and Climate Change in Lima prior to UNFCCC-COP20, which resulted in the "Lima 2014 Declaration on Biodiversity and Climate Change". • The Third Collaborative Research Network Program (CRN3) (2012-2018) consists of 17 projects involving 131 investigators across 14 IAI member countries. It includes 10 five-year projects and 7 smaller "Science Integration projects" focused on "constructing inter-or transdisciplinary, intersectoral science".
• An evaluation of IAI funded research shows a significant increase in the integration of social sciences. Integration in project conceptual stages rose from 33% under CRN1 to 63% under CRN2 and reached 87% under CRN3. Additionally, the use of qualitative methodologies increased from 50% in CRN1 to 91% in CRN3.
• A MacArthur Foundation funded project concluded in February 2015, identifying high-risk ecosystems in the Andes. In the Colombia-Ecuador area, these include the "montane and low montane rainforest of the Northern Andes". In the Peru-Bolivia area, they include the "Southwest Amazonian foothill forest", the "high-Andean humid shrubby grassland of the Yungas", and the "Southwest Amazonia seasonal evergreen sub-Andean forest".
• The IAI is engaging with the Future Earth (FE) program, though it noted that an initial governance proposal contained "command and control provisions" that would have prevented the IAI or sovereign member countries from integrating. An alternative proposal providing a "more equitable association between regional and global entities" is pending a decision.
• The Small Grants for Collaborative Research in the Americas (2011-2015) program involved 14 member countries and 76 researchers, leveraging US$ 24.5 million in additional funding from an original investment of US$ 2.6 million.
