Plan de Actividades del IAI para julio 2015 – junio 2016

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) activity plan for July 2015 to June 2016 details institutional restructuring, research initiatives focused on ecosystem services and adaptation, and a series of capacity-building seminars across Latin America and the Caribbean.

• The IAI is implementing a tripartite structure, which includes transitioning administration from Brazil to Uruguay by the second half of 2015 and establishing a coordinator/director for the Buenos Aires office. The institute is also updating host country agreements with Argentina and Brazil.
• The IAI is redesigning its IT infrastructure, including a new website hosted in Buenos Aires and a telephony system linking Buenos Aires and Montevideo, with future expansion planned for Brazil. A new autonomous videoconferencing system based in Europe is being tested for potential migration to Montevideo.
• Research efforts include monitoring CRN3 projects and preparing a call for small grants on 'the role of ecosystem services in adaptation' to align with the CoP 22 mandate. Additionally, the IAI is collaborating with ICSU on a proposal to the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) for a science and capacity development program for Africa and Latin America.
• Capacity development activities for 2015-2016 include a groundwater management seminar in Cartagena, Colombia (September 2015), a sustainable development conference in Panama City (October 2015), and a proposed workshop on Andean biodiversity (November 2015). For 2016-2018, four Professional Development Seminars are planned, including one on climate variability and human health in MERCOSUR to support a PhD program at the Universidad del Litoral in Argentina.
• The IAI is engaging in policy work through IPBES and the OSACT-UNFCCC process. The Science-Policy office is developing strategic documents based on SPAC conferences and will prepare impact assessments of IAI research programs at the request of member countries.
