Informe de avance del CE

This progress report from the President of the Executive Council (CE) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) details the transition to a tripartite governance structure, the status of regional offices, and challenges regarding the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC).

• The IAI is transitioning from a single integrated direction in Sao José dos Campos, Brazil, to a tripartite structure consisting of three specialized directions: a Science-Policy Liaison Direction in Buenos Aires, Argentina; a Scientific Development Direction in Sao José dos Campos, Brazil; and a Direction of Integrated Finance and Operations in Montevideo, Uruguay.
• The Science-Policy Liaison Direction in Argentina is operational following an agreement signed on October 30, 2012. Dr. Tomás Lindemann was selected as Director and Dr. Nicolás Lucas as Deputy Director.
• The Direction of Integrated Finance and Operations in Uruguay is being established following an agreement signed on November 13, 2012, and ratified by parliament on April 2, 2013. The office is expected to be installed in the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU).
• The agreement for the Scientific Development Direction in Brazil remains under study to resolve pending issues.
• The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) is facing a critical lack of continuity in its composition. In June 2013, four members' terms end (three of whom are ineligible for reelection), and four more terms end in 2014. An attempt to fill vacancies via a new electronic voting system failed because the minimum number of countries required for a quorum was not reached.
• The IAI joined an international consortium for the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme project called ENSOCIO-LA, which focuses on sustainable cooperation in research and innovation regarding the environment, climate change, and resource efficiency. The project was approved in March 2013 and began in June 2013.
