NINETEENTH CONFERENCE OF THE PARTIES (CoP) OF THE IAI

The Nineteenth Conference of the Parties (CoP) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) agreed to expand the IAI Directorate's capacity to provide scientific knowledge for public policy and increase public awareness through a distributed structure hosted by Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay.

• The CoP determined that the IAI Directorate requires increased capacity to provide scientific knowledge to governments for public policy development and to establish future science directions. To achieve this, the IAI will add two new Director positions—one for science development and one for communications—both reporting to the Director General, with the goal of implementing these changes without impacting the IAI Core Budget.
• The IAI will adopt a distributed Directorate structure hosted by three countries: science development activities will be located in São José dos Campos, Brazil; communications and science-policy liaison will be based in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and overall coordination and integration will be based in Montevideo, Uruguay.
• An ad hoc committee comprising Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Uruguay, and the United States was tasked with creating a detailed integrated proposal for the tripartite arrangement, including seeking legal advice, for approval by CoP-20 scheduled for June 27-29, 2012.
