Minutes of the CoP-XVII

• The IAI is exploring a research and training initiative to support REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) in Latin America, targeting 3.6 million Euros over three years. The program aims to address measurable, reportable and verifiable (MRV) REDD credits and the optimal design of conservation units.
• The CoP decided that the IAI Director would lead the strategic planning process, with the Executive Council and Scientific Advisory Committee fully integrated into the discussions. This process includes designing a new science program to replace CRN II, which was scheduled to end by mid-2011.
• Member countries reported various national climate initiatives: Mexico aimed to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 50 million tons (6% of the baseline) through its 2009-2012 Climate Change Program; Costa Rica set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2021; and Colombia implemented pilot projects for sea level rise and rainwater harvesting.
• The IAI's science program has produced specific regional outputs, including a software for synthesizing functional biodiversity developed in Argentina, a chemical weather forecasting system for urban contamination in Santiago, Chile, and a manual for studying dry forests produced at IVIC in Venezuela.
• The CoP elected five members to the Scientific Advisory Committee: Carolina Vera, Claudia Natenzon, Ramon Pichs, Silvio Pantoja, and Harold Mooney. The Executive Council for the next two years was elected to include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, and the USA.
