Annual Program (July 2010 – June 2011)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) planned a series of training institutes and science programs between July 2010 and June 2011, focusing on seasonal climate predictions, urban responses to climate change, and biodiversity in the Andes. Key initiatives included a MacArthur Foundation project to assess research and institutional needs for Andean biodiversity and a research internship program with IAI-INPE/CPTEC.

• The IAI scheduled four training institutes between August 2010 and April 2011, covering seasonal climate predictions in Argentina, urban climate change responses in Chile, responsible conduct of research in Argentina, and land use change and biofuels in the La Plata Basin in Paraguay.
• The IAI planned a MacArthur project to assess research and institutional needs regarding climate change effects on Andean biodiversity, which included dissemination meetings and government visits in Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia in August 2010, and the finalization of a science book and strategy papers by October 2010.
• Science program activities for 2010-2011 included synthesis meetings on hydrology, climate modeling, biodiversity, and oceanography in the Patagonian shelf, as well as the preparation of a proposal for the MacArthur Foundation regarding climate-related vulnerability assessments in Andean biodiversity hotspots.
