Programa Anual (Julio 2009-Junio 2010)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) outlines its planned activities for July 2009 to June 2010, focusing on transdisciplinary research synthesis, land use and biodiversity projects in the Andes and Plata Basin, and strategic institutional planning.

• The IAI is advancing a transdisciplinary approach by integrating social dimensions into natural sciences through Cooperative Research Networks and Small Grants for Human Dimensions. For the third year of the CRN II program, a comprehensive synthesis will begin with a June workshop for all Principal Investigators (PIs) of the CRNs and human dimensions projects, leading to the development of a synthesis strategy and the creation of reports, books, and decision-making summaries.
• The IAI is managing several specific regional projects: an IDRC-funded project on land use change, biofuels, and rural development in the Plata Basin; a MacArthur Foundation-funded evaluation of Climate Change and Andean Biodiversity (organized with SCOPE), which includes a scientific evaluation workshop in May and a regional institutional and governmental consultation workshop in June regarding research and adaptation governance.
• Planned events for 2009 and 2010 include a scientific-political forum in Ecuador in July regarding ecosystem services and climate change adaptation in the Andes, and a training institute in Chile in 2010 focused on urban responses to climate change.
• The IAI submitted two funding proposals: one to the MacArthur Foundation regarding biodiversity gradients and ecosystem functions in the Northern Andes, and another to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on health and climate change adaptation. While the IDB proposal was accepted, the IAI's eligibility is currently being questioned.
• Institutional priorities for 2009/10 include the finalization of the IAI strategic plan and the recruitment of a new Deputy Director of Scientific Programs. The Executive Directorate notes a significant workload increase for current staff until the new hire and a substitute for the Executive Director's Assistant are fully operational.
