Approved Annual Program (July 2009-June 2010)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) outlines its planned activities for the July 2009 to June 2010 period, focusing on science program synthesis, specific regional projects in the Andes and La Plata Basin, and strategic organizational planning.

• The IAI is entering the third year of the CRN II program and will initiate a cross-program synthesis effort starting with a June workshop for all Principal Investigators from the Collaborative Research Networks and human dimensions projects. The Directorate intends to produce a strategy for program synthesis, along with outlines for policy briefs, books, and synthesis papers.
• The IAI is managing several targeted regional projects, including an IDRC-funded project on biofuels and rural development in the Rio de La Plata basin and a MacArthur Foundation-funded assessment on Climate Change and Andean Biodiversity. The latter includes a science assessment workshop in May and a regional workshop in June focused on institutional and governance issues regarding research and adaptation.
• Planned events for 2009 and 2010 include a Science-Policy Forum on Ecosystems Services and Climate Change Adaptation in the Andes to be held in Ecuador in July, and a Training Institute on Cities’ Responses to Climate Change scheduled for 2010 in Chile.
• The IAI submitted a proposal to the UNFCCC SBSTA in Bonn for June, aiming to encourage Parties to develop science and policy activities regarding land quality, biofuels, and adaptation and mitigation.
• The Directorate is working on the final IAI strategic plan, incorporating input from the Director, former Interim Director John Stewart, and the strategy committee. Additionally, the organization is recruiting a new Science Assistant Director, noting that staff workloads will increase until new personnel are fully integrated.
