Approved Annual Program (July 2009-June 2010)

The IAI's 2009/10 program focuses on synthesizing transdisciplinary research from Collaborative Research Networks and Human Dimensions projects, managing specific projects on biofuels in the La Plata Basin and biodiversity in the Andes, and organizing science-policy forums in Ecuador and Chile. The institute also aims to finalize its strategic plan and engage with the UNFCCC SBSTA on adaptation and mitigation related to biofuels and land quality.

• The IAI is initiating a cross-program synthesis effort for the third year of the CRN II program, starting with a June workshop for Principal Investigators from Collaborative Research Networks and human dimensions projects. The Directorate intends to produce a synthesis strategy, outlines for policy briefs, books, and synthesis papers, and conduct training on model integration for cross-disciplinary data management.
• The institute is managing several targeted regional projects, including an IDRC-funded project on biofuels and rural development in the Rio de La Plata basin and a MacArthur Foundation-funded assessment of Climate Change and Andean Biodiversity. The latter includes a science assessment workshop in May and a regional consultation workshop in June focused on governance and adaptation.
• Planned events for the period include a Science-Policy Forum on Ecosystems Services and Climate Change Adaptation in the Andes to be held in July in Ecuador, and a Training Institute on Cities’ Responses to Climate Change scheduled for 2010 in Chile.
• The IAI submitted a proposal to the UNFCCC SBSTA in Bonn for June, seeking to encourage Parties to create science and policy activities regarding land quality and biofuels in the context of mitigation and adaptation.
• Administrative priorities for 2009/10 include the finalization of the IAI strategic plan and the recruitment of a new Science Assistant Director.
