Report on the call and selection of Small Grant Program for the Human Dimensions SGP-HD

This report details the launch and selection process for the Small Grants Program for Human Dimensions (SGP-HD), an initiative by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) to strengthen the human dimensions and policy components of its science program.

• The Small Grants Program for Human Dimensions (SGP-HD) was established after the IAI Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) noted at its 22nd meeting in July 2005 that the Collaborative Research Network (CRN II) funding would "continue an imbalanced portfolio" and that the "human dimensions component of the IAI science program needed further strengthening".
• The SGP-HD was launched on 26 January 2007, funded by a US$ 800,000 grant from the United States National Science Foundation (NSF) for a two-year period. The program aimed to support 4-6 research projects, with each project eligible for up to US$ 80,000 per year for up to two years.
• By the 7 March 2007 deadline, 14 proposals were received, involving 9 CRN II projects across 15 countries, requesting approximately 2.1 million dollars. A Review Panel of SAC members and outside experts evaluated these proposals from 16 to 18 May 2007, and the SAC recommended funding 6 proposals.
• The evaluation of proposals was based on primary criteria including scientific excellence and technical soundness, interdisciplinary collaboration, networking, and policy and societal relevance. Additional considerations included IAI programmatic goals, budget appropriateness, gender distribution, and geographical balance among IAI member countries.
